Who are the Akaitcho Dene First Nations?

Akaitcho Dene First Nation members reside primarily in the south-eastern part of the Northwest Territories in four communities around Great Slave Lake: Dettah, N’dilo, Deninu K’ue, and Lutsel K’e.

Akaitcho translates to “Big Foot”; but to the Akaitcho Dene, it has greater meaning. Akaitcho, pronounced Akeh-Cho, was the name of a great Dene leader, warrior, tracker and hunter. Akaitcho is credited with bringing his people into the fur trade and with establishing a peace treaty with the neighboring T’licho Dene.
